EBOS - EVENT ONE – THE EUROPEAN CLASSIC, KINGS LYNN

Chris Shutt collects his £400 cheque after an amazing performance over the weekend

Providing the sternest test and greatest opportunity for all ambitious billiard players, the new European billiards circuit (EBOS) began with the "European Classic" staged at the Maltings Cue Club, Kings Lynn, over the week-end of 26th-27th August. With most of the country's best billiard players taking part, it was hardly surprising that there would be some good performances. However, it was Chris Shutt who proved to be the star of the show, winning the event and making breaks of 527 and 448 in the process. His 527 helped him to a 90 minute total of 1,177 which is the highest recorded for a match of this duration in England since the rules were last substantially revised in 1983. His opponent in this match was Teesside's Darren Cook, the current English Under-16 Champion, who at 14 year-old was the youngest competitor in the event. Having qualified through a tough group to reach the knock-out stages, he was not disheartened by Shutt's massive break, and showed his potential by immediately following this with a 51 of his own.

Shutt waited until the final before unleashing his 448 break, his opponent on this occasion being Roxton Chapman. This helped him to a comfortable 895-263 win, Shutt finishing with a match average of 63.9. These two players had always looked to be the ones to beat, having between them contributed nine breaks over the double-century during the tournament.

There was a special prize of £1,000 on offer for any player making a thousand break, and there is some anticipation that this target may well be reached during the course of the series. Also, as something of a novelty, a prize of £250 was available for the first player to make a 10-shot. Although neither prize was claimed on this occasion, Jimmy Chambers came closest to the 10-shot, getting the pot-white, cannon and in-off, only to see the red rattle the jaws and stay out!

Chris Shutt collected £400 for his win and Chapman £200 as runner-up, with proportional prizes down to the quarter-finals. The next event will be at the Cambridge Snooker Centre on 28th-29th October when Dave Causier is expected to join the circuit. Current World Champion, Geet Sethi, has also expressed an interest in travelling over from India to take part in at least some of these events. Limited places will be available to wildcard entries any anyone wanting to take part should contact Phil Mumford on 01223-249661, or email snookcamb@hotmail.com

EBOS - EVENT TWO – THE EAST OF ENGLAND OPEN, CAMBRIDGE

Wildcard Rom Surin comes out on top after coming through a very strong field

The second tournament of the English-Billiards Open Series (EBOS) took place at the Cambridge Snooker Centre over the week-end of 28th-29th October. The already impressive entry list for new circuit received a boost with the arrival of Geet Sethi, who travelled from India to show his support for the initiative. He will be taking part in all the remaining tournaments. Playing in an exhibition at Newmarket two days before the event, Sethi warmed up with a break of 541, but was destined for less success in his first competitive test since winning the World Professional Championship in June.

To emphasise the international attraction of this competition, the line-up also included a number of players from Thailand , including Rom Surin, the 1999 IBSF Champion, who were in England receiving some coaching from Mike Russell prior to their appearance in the Asian Games.

Chris Shutt turned in the most impressive performance of the opening day, making breaks of 330 and 331 in a one-hour total of 881 against another member of the international contingent, Vinnie Calabrese from Australia . Despite this setback, Calabrese still managed to qualify from the group, but declined to take up his place in the knock-out stages, preferring to travel to Aberdeen to support his fellow-countryman Neil Robertson who was playing in the final of the World Snooker Grand Prix.

With all the favourites progressing to the second day, the surprises began in the first of the knock-out rounds, starting with the elimination of Geet Sethi by Rom Surin. At the same stage, Roxton Chapman was eliminated by another Thai player, Thawat. Surin continued his outstanding form by defeating Chris Shutt in the semi-finals, while Billy Bousfield put in an excellent performance to overcome Thawat in the same round. The final pairing would have been difficult to forecast prior to the start, but they produced a fine display to round off proceedings. Surin proved the victor, a break of 246 being decisive in his 562-197 win, and a match average of 46.8 standing testament to the quality of his play.

EBOS - EVENT THREE – THE CHARITY CHALLENGE, NEWMARKET SNOOKER & BOWL

Chris Shutt collecting his cheque for £400

"Fantastic" was the most commonly used adjective by spectators and competitors alike to describe the proceedings at the third in the series of EBOS billiards tournaments. This was held at the Newmarket Snooker Centre over the weekend of 27th-28th January and, as usual, attracted an array of international talent. The field was headed by World Champion, Geet Sethi ( India ), and English professionals Chris Shutt, Roxton Chapman and Paul Bennett. With some of England 's best amateurs also taking part, it wasn't long before the breaks began to flow. The qualifying groups saw 22 centuries and a further six double centuries, the best being 290 by Chris Shutt. The amateurs also contributed to the entertainment, the best breaks coming from Matthew Sutton (182) and Billy Bousfield (180).

However, as the event moved into the last 16 on the Saturday evening, it was clear that these performances only represented a warm-up! In the first of the knock-out rounds Chris Shutt set a new world record aggregate score for a 90 minute match with an incredible total of 1,382 which included breaks of 446, 305, 189 and 155.

Moving on to the finals day, which saw play commence with the quarter-finals onwards; spectators were spoiled for choice, hardly knowing which table to watch. At the same time that Chris Shutt was completing a mammoth break of 676 to win his match, on adjacent tables, Roxton Chapman and Geet Sethi were winning their games with unfinished runs of 304 and 549 respectively!

The semi-finals saw Chris Shutt make the highest break of the competition with 717 unfinished, incidentally recording his third consecutive 1,000+ aggregate in a 1,226-92 win over Roxton Chapman. Geet Sethi moved into the final with a less spectacular win over Matthew Sutton, although breaks of 190 by Sethi and 129 by Sutton might have normally been considered excellent accomplishments in a 90 minute match.

Reserving one of his best performances for the final, Sethi produced a superb break of 468 which helped him to an advantage of almost 200 points. Shutt, however, showed great resolve under pressure to play out time with an unfinished break of 459, winning the match 865-585. It was breathtaking billiards, and for two players each to make a 400+ break in a 90 minute match must surely be another record. Were certificates still being awarded for record performances, Chris Shutt would certainly have come away from this event with a fine collection. As it was, he took the winner's cheque of £400, with Sethi collecting £200 as runner-up. There will be an additional distribution of prize money at the end of the series which is calculated against overall ranking positions. The tournament was run in conjunction with the Children's Society, a charity who raised over £800 during the weekend. Referees in attendance were: Clive Scott (Tournament Director), Dave Smith, Peter Cooper, Andrew Grice and Paul Dunning.

EBOS -EVENT FOUR - THE IRISH OPEN THE IVY ROOMS, CARLOW.

Geet Sethi in action on his way to winning the Irish Open at the Ivy rooms

Saturday 24th-25th March. The Ivy Rooms , Carlow , Ireland

The fourth of the EBOS billiard tournaments resulted in a win for Geet Sethi, although problems with Irish immigration at Dublin airport almost caused him to miss the event. Arriving without a visa, he was told that his choices were to fly back to Heathrow, or go to prison! Thankfully, he managed to convince the officials that he was not a risk to national security and joined the rest of the 48 man field at The Ivy Rooms, Carlow, for the start of play on Saturday 24th March.

Probably the best match of the tournament was the quarter-final encounter between the Teesside duo of Paul Bennett and Chris Shutt. Bennett had established a lead of almost 400 after 25 minutes of the 90 minute game, before a break of 227 from Shutt brought him back into contention. A second double century (222) then gave him a 91 point lead, before a fighting reply of 205 from Bennett swung the match once more. With little time remaining Shutt came to the table 79 points adrift, but even with his speed of scoring he could only race to 58 before the bell went, leaving Bennett the winner of a memorable game by 21 points.

However, the excitement of this match was missed by the majority of the audience who were being mesmerised by a magnificent compilation of 631 unfinished by Sethi, playing his quarter-final tie against Phil Mumford on an adjacent table. This break, made almost exclusively by "postman's knock," was easily the highest of the competition.

In the semi-finals, Bennett produced another double-century break to comfortably overcome Roxton Chapman 627-303. An unfinished break of 143 by Chapman giving some respectability to the scoreline. Sethi also made a double century to defeat the newly crowned English Amateur Champion, Matthew Sutton, who had performed well to reach this stage of the competition.

In the final, Sethi established command of the game with breaks of 112 and 332, which ultimately proved to be the difference between the players. Bennett could not reproduce his earlier form, and adding a top break of only 94, allowed Sethi to complete a 408 point win.

These displays of top class billiards continue to receive an enthusiastic reception wherever they are staged and the latest event was no exception. At the conclusion of proceedings it was announced that the European Billiards & Snooker Association will hold a "European Billiards Open" alongside their Snooker Championships which are scheduled to take place at Carlow in June. This will be the first time the EBSA have endorsed such an event.

EBOS -EVENT FIVE - THE JERSEY OPEN FIRST TOWER INSTITUTE CLUB, St HELIER.

Local players Guy Heys & Darren Malzard both qualify for the last 16 delighting the locals

The fifth EBOS event was hosted by the Jersey Billiards & Snooker Association at the First Tower institute club, St Helier, over the week-end of 26th-27th May 2007. Once again there was huge interest, with the Institute being packed throughout the week-end, and extensive coverage by local radio and newspapers. Added interest was given as two of the local players, Guy Heys and Darren Malzard, came through the qualifying groups to reach the knock-out stages.

Roxton Chapman proved the eventual winner, defeating Chris Shutt in the 90 minute final, a break of 117 which occupied most of the last 15 minutes being the decisive factor in his victory. Chapman recorded the excellent average of 56.5 in this match.

Earlier in the competition it had been Shutt who was the most impressive player. In his last 16 match against Matthew Sutton, Shutt made a break of 543, easily the highest of the competition, and quite possibly a record for Jersey. He also made two other triple centuries during the week-end (324 and 317) and passed 1,000 points in a 90 minute game on two occasions.

Other good performances came from Phil Mumford, who made a break of 273 on his way reaching the semi-finals, where he lost to Shutt, and Paul Bennett, who made two double century breaks with 278 and 268 before losing to Chapman in the quarter-finals.

Perhaps the most unlikely success was achieved by Jimmy Chambers, who having left his own cue at home in Ely desperately searched the venue for a replacement. The one he eventually borrowed was so little regarded by his fellow players that he was offered odds of 6-1 against making a century break with it. Having struggled to qualify for the knock-out stages by finishing third in his group, the prospects did not seem good, but he nevertheless staked £20 on his ability to do this. In his next match, a last 16 encounter against Michael Wright, he rose to the challenge by taking a break to 98, and being in position for an easy cannon, called the attention of the stakeholder. He then claimed his winnings by making the score with extravagant force, accompanied by the referee's call of "one hundred." Chambers, now clearly warming to his new cue, and richer by £120, subsequently progressed to the semi-final, where, although losing to Roxton Chapman, he made another century. On this occasion however, nobody had been willing to lay odds on a repetition of the feat, although he did receive an additional £100 for reaching this stage of the competition.

Circumstances had allowed the Jersey Association only four weeks to prepare, but the level of organisation and hospitality was so impressive that at the conclusion the EBOS committee announced that the Jersey Open was to be included on the 2008 calendar as a confirmed fixture.

EVENT 6, EUROPEAN OPEN, THE IVY ROOMS, CARLOW.

Peter Gilchrist & Michael Wright being presented with the winner's cheque & the '10 Shot' bonus cheque by TD, Clive Scott

The EBOS committee ended a spectacular first season by having their final tournament adopted by the EBSA as the official European Open Billiards Championship. This was held over 13th-16th June 2007, alongside the later stages of the European snooker championships at Jim Leacy's Ivy Rooms in Carlow, and represented the European Association's first venture into billiards.

The organisation of the championship was shared with EBOS, whose 24 subscribing members were given automatic right of entry, and they were supplemented by nominations from EBSA member countries. The official English representatives were Martin Goodwill and Tony James. These entries were themselves significant, in that they represented the first tangible results of a new climate of co-operation between the respective English Associations for snooker and billiards.

Ultimately, there were 32 entries, mainly English and Irish, boosted by players from Scotland and Jersey. Significantly, there was also one "wildcard" entry from Singapore. This was Teesside born, ex-world champion, Peter Gilchrist, who proved to be in a class of his own throughout the championship, winning with some ease. It was unfortunate that most of the EBOS "big-guns" were absent, as players such as Geet Sethi, Roxton Chapman, Chris Shutt and Paul Bennett would certainly have made Gilchrist's victory less assured.

Gilchrist made best breaks of 619 and 312, with five others over the double-century, and was the only player to exceed this mark. He also made aggregate totals of over a thousand points in all his two-hour matches in the knock-out stages, the highest of these, 1,624, was one of the best scoring achievements made anywhere in recent years.

Larry Codd, champion of Ireland over forty years ago and still an enthusiastic billiards player, offered a high break prize of EU 200 for the last two days of the championship. Both of these were collected by Gilchrist who also took £400 for winning the inaugural Championship, defeating Billy Bousfield in the final with as much ease as he had dismissed all his previous opponents.

However, the biggest single payout went to Michael Wright, who, during the course of a one-sided match against Gilchrist, was delighted to pocket all three balls in making an unexpected 10-shot. This enabled him to claim a prize £250 which had been offered at the start of the season, and which was increased by £50 for each event it remained unclaimed. This being the first occasion the feat had been achieved, Michael collected a cheque for £500, which, he will no doubt readily admit, owed more to good fortune than skill.

Now firmly established on the international calendar, it is expected that Scotland will host the next European Billiards Championship in April 2008.
