The English-Billiards Open Series is an exciting new venture created from the European Classic Series (EBCS) of 2005/6. The catalyst for this series was a simple challenge match set up between Phillip Welham and Andrew Grice for the West Norfolk League versus The Vienna League. This challenge match spawned two new tournaments. The European Classic in Kings Lynn, and The Austrian Open in Vienna. With the adoption of two established open tournaments in Cambridge and Sherringham, the EBCS snowballed into a trial European Series of 4 events, culminating in a fantastic finale in Vienna during May 2006.

During the season we have adopted a number of incentives aimed at making each event more challenging.

£500 Ten Shot£1,000 for 1000 Break

Last season a £500 bonus was on offer for the first person to make a '10 shot' during the series, which was won by Michael Wright during his last 16 match against Peter Gilchrist at, the European Open Billiards Championship in Carlow.

Everyone thought this rare feat would not be achieved this season, but Phillip Smith from Jersey proved everyone wrong and scooped the £500 bounty in the last event of the season. Not to be oudone, Matt Sutton secured a 10 shot of his own the following day to scoop £250, making this a record breaking weekend to remember for a very long time.

We also still have a huge £1,000 prize for the first player to make a 1,000 break during any event. This has not been won this season, so will roll over as an incentive for the 2008/2009 season. You know what you have to do!!!!!

The current season has now been concluded, with the final event in Jersey proving to be a resounding sucess that delivered two 10 shots. Next season's calendar of events has been finalised, and can be found under the News section on this page.

The opening two events of this season were won in spectacular style by Phil Mumford, with Martin Goodwill defeating Peter Gilchrist in the final of event three in Newmarket, and all Ireland Champion James Moore taking the title in event four. Phil Mumford again showed his class when defeating Dhruv Sitwala in the final of the European Open, and Geet Sethi won the Welsh Open in fine style on difficult tables. The final event was won by Richie Comiskey from Northern Irelend, who defeated Paul Dunning to scoop the first prize.

It is with great sadness that EBOS has been informed of the death of Andrew Grice, a founder member of EBOS and current European Promotor. Andrew died suddenly on 27th March 2008 aged just 55 years, of a suspected heart attack.

His contribution to the formation of EBOS, and indeed the game of English-Billiards in his adopted Austria is nothing short of immense. His legacy will surely live on, as will the memory of a man to whom both EBOS and Austrian billiards owe so much. Our sympathy and thoughts go out to his family at this deeply sad time. Rest in peace Andrew.
